High levels of obese children on Island

One in five children of reception age on the Isle of Man is overweight or obese.

That’s according to statistics released by the Department of Health which show that 7.1 per cent of the children are obese and 12.6 per cent are overweight.

A new plan has now been launched to tackle the problem which focuses on increasing physical activity level and improving diets.

The department says obesity is a major public health concern with far reaching consequences.

Public health strategist Dawn Henley says it’s important to think of the long term effects:
