Hefty fines for drivers using mobiles

The DoI’s Road Safety Team and the police have issued stern new penalties for anyone caught using their phone while driving.

The Island’s road safety manager Gordon Edwards has issued a warning that anyone caught doing so could face a fine of up the £1,000.

In a statement, he outlined that using a mobile while behind the wheel has caused 39 accidents on the Island’s roads to date.

Hands-free mobile phone kits for the car cost as little as £15 from some outlets – a saving of £985 on a maximum fine.

Mr Edwards added that using your phone at traffic lights or while being stuck in traffic is still an offence and will lead to major fine.
