Freedom of Information impact assessment given go ahead

It was agreed by the Council of Ministers yesterday that a full impact assessment should be carried out before any further action is taken with regards to a Freedom of Information act on the Island.

As well as approving the assessment they will also take steps to strengthen the existing Code of Practice on Access to Government Information.

The only estimate they have to go on is from when Jersey introduced the act, with a start up cost of roughly £5 million and an additional £1 million a year to maintain it.

The FOI act has been tirelessly campaigned for on the Island, most notably by the Positive Action Group.

Chief Minister Allan Bell has said he is committed to seeing this through, however he anticipates whatever the outcome it won't please all parties.
