Extended sentence for prisoner who started fire

A prisoner who set fire to an empty cell at the Isle of Man Prison has had his sentence extended.

24-year-old Jamie Mcardle carried out the "prank" on the B wing on June 2nd - using a taper made of rolled up toilet roll he managed to smoke out the unoccupied cell.

In doing so he scorched a towel and the floor causing over £300 worth of damage - at Douglas Courthouse earlier this week he pleaded guilty to one count of arson.

His advocate told the court it was a common prank in the facility but criticised the police for taking so long to bring the case before the court describing it as "inexplicable".

Magistrates lengthened Mcardle's 21 month sentence - which is due to end on November 27th - by 28 days.
