Exam results U-turn a 'positive announcement'

The U-turn on exam results which could see grades rise for some Island students has been called a 'positive announcement' by an Island school.

Yesterday the UK government and exam regulator, Ofqual, announced A-Level results from last week and upcoming GCSE results would now be based on teacher-assessed grades rather than a controversial computer algorithm used last week.

Under the computer system, around 40 per cent of pupils saw their results downgraded, sparking widespread criticism.

On Monday, exam board, Cambridge International, also confirmed any grades it issued for the June 2020 series would not be lower than the predicted outcome submitted by any school.

Speaking about the announcement online, St Ninians High School said: "This is a positive announcement as it will mean a number of grades received by many of our students will increase.

"We also understand for some students who received their A Level results last Thursday that this change could also impact on their chosen university place.

"As it stands we have not received any information on this directly from UCAS or university admissions but if you are a parent or a student who have concerns or queries regarding this please do not hesitate to contact us here at school as guidance should be issued very soon on this.

"Students and parents are asked not to approach individual teachers to ask for grades, centre assessed grades will be issued formally once the school has received further guidance from the relevant exam boards."
