The candidates wanting your vote in the 2011 Isle Of Man general election

Who will be your number one on September 29th 2011?

 

 


NOMINATIONS for this year’s general election close on Tuesday August 30. Candidates must deliver their nomination papers between 10am and 1pm that day to the returning officer in the constituency who then declares the nominations half an hour afterwards.

Ayre - one seat

Pat Ayres, standing as a Liberal Vannin candidate, is a semi-retired transport manager.
 
Andrew Newington-Bridges, former member of Arbory Commissioners and a past chairman of the Isle of Man Municipal Association, had a career in manufacturing, marketing and sales before moving to the island more than 20 years ago.

Eddie Teare, Minister for Education and Children, previously served as Health Minister, chairman of the Manx Electricity Authority and as member for Treasury. Became MHK for Ayre in 2004.


Castletown - one seat

 

David Pownall, former airport security officer was in the military for nine years. Awarded the United Nations Peace Keeping Medal. Now working for Manx National Heritage, having won his claim for unfair dismissal against the Isle of Man Airport.

Carol Quine, unsuccessfully stood against Tony Brown in the 1996 general election. She became a commissioner in the town in 2008.

Richard Ronan is a former Castletown commissioner. He resigned as a commissioner in February this year after seven years, having grown disillusioned with the erosion of power in the island’s local government.

Colin Leather was elected to the Castletown Commissioners and went on to be the chairman of the commissioners in 1988, 1989, 1998, 1999 and 2010.

Jason Moorhouse has taught at Castle Rushen High School for the past 16 years.

Mahendra Patel has spent over 25 years working in the town, where he and his wife run the Castle Pharmacy. He is the sixth general election candidate has come forward in Castletown.

 


Douglas East - two seats


Chris Robertshaw, former managing director of the Sefton Hotel, secured his Douglas East seat in the by-election of 2010. He had unsuccessfully stood for Douglas East in the 2006 general election.

Brenda Cannell moved to the Isle of Man in 1977. Former Douglas councillor representing Derby ward 1992-95. MHK for Douglas East since 1996.

Geraldine O’Neill, a teacher at St Ninian’s High School for the last 10 years, has been the chairman of the Irish Turkish Business Association.

Richard Kissack, elected unopposed as Douglas councillor for Victoria Ward in April 2008 as a Liberal Vannin candidate, subsequently resigned from the party and his standing in the general election as an independent.

Local broadcaster Paul Moulton announced his intention to stand over the weekend saying he wants to do his bit to help keep the Isle of Man PLC on track in the difficult times ahead.

John Karran 62, is a chef and was born in the Isle Of Man.


Douglas North - two seats


Theo Fleurbaay, founder and chairman of the Manx Hospitality Partnership. Proprietor of the Arrandale House hotel in Douglas.

Bill Henderson, MHK for Douglas North since 1998,  former minister for agriculture, has been chairman of the Office of Fair Trading since 2008.

John Houghton is MHK for Douglas North. For 20 years until 2000 was sub-postmaster at Willaston post office and was commandant with the Isle of Man Special Constabulary.

Peter Hill is standing as the Douglas North LVP candidate. Served for 25 years in the Metropolitan Police before moving to the Isle Of Man, he is Clerk to the Lonan Commisioners and Deputy Clerk to Laxey Commisioners.


Douglas South - two seats


Bill Malarkey, standing as an independent, was elected to Douglas South in 2006 as a Liberal Vannin candidate. Left the party because he wanted to take up a role in government. Currently political member of the departments of Home Affairs and Social Care.

David Cretney, of Vicarage Park, was first elected in Douglas South in a by-election in 1985 and has represented the constituency every election since. He is standing as a Manx Labour Party candidate. Currently Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure, the 57-year-old was previously minister for Trade and Industry and also spent 10 years as minister for Tourism and Leisure.

Kate Beecroft, press officer and former chairman of the Liberal Vannin Party and a Braddan commissioner.


Douglas West two seats


John Skinner  is a retired fire service chief. Stood as an MLC last year. Has been a lay member of the government planning committee and also spent four years as a lay member of the Health Services Consultative Committee.

Geoff Corkish is currently member for the Department of Economic Development.

John Shimmin is currently Minister of Environment, Food and Agriculture. First elected to Douglas West in 1996.
Chris Thomas is standing as a Liberal Vannin candidate and is the party’s economics and business spokesman. He is a financial analyst and university lecturer who moved to the island in 2001 and has worked at the Isle of Man Business School, the City of London and various places abroad.


Garff - one seat


Nigel Dobson is a Liberal Vannin Party candidate, having been one of the party’s founder members. He is a member and former chairman of Lonan Commissioners. He stood for the Garff seat in the 2006 general election.

Steve Rodan, Speaker of the House of Keys since 2006 and Deputy President of Tynwald since 2007. First elected as MHK for Garff in May 1995 in a by-election, representing the seat ever since.


Glenfaba - one seat


David Anderson, MHK for Glenfaba , was minister for Education and then Transport before his appointment as minister for Health last year.

Geoffrey Boot is making a second attempt to take the Glenfaba seat, having unsuccessfully stood against David Anderson in the 2006 general election.

Matthew Wadsworth is standing as an independent. Studied architecture at Hull University before working in the senior management team at British Gas. Returned to the Isle of Man seven years ago and took up a role with a blue chip bank.


Malew and Santon - one seat


Graham Cregeen, successfully contested Malew and Santon in the 2006 general election. Current political member for the Department of Infrastructure.

John Hanson, has lived in the island for more than 40 years, has ran a small hotel in Douglas for 20 years.

Gareth Kelly, is a self-employed businessman was born and brought up in Santon, where he has lived all his life.


Middle  - one seat


Paul Craine, for more than a decade, has been the island’s co-ordinating Adviser for 11-19 Education. He has been chairman of Marown Commissioners.

Juan Cottier, Liberal Vannin candidate, joined the RAF in 1986, worked as a data analyst for the air warfare centre in High Wycombe. After leaving the RAF, he worked in the London area for Lombard, NatWest banks and Smiths Industries, returning to the island in 2001

Howard Quayle , former president of the Manx National Farmers’ Union. Until 2010, was the union’s public face which involved fighting the industry’s corner at meetings all over Europe including the heart of the EU in Brussels.

Martyn Quayle, was elected as MHK for Middle in 2001. Has been Minister for Tourism and Leisure and then Home Affairs before being appointed Minister for Social Care following last year’s government restructuring.


Michael - one seat


Alf Cannan,  the son the constituency’s current MHK David Cannan, was educated at King William’s College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He served four years as a commissioned officer in the Royal Regiment of Wales.
 
Paul Heavey is managing director of Island Taxis Limited, a position he has held since establishing the locally based company in 1996.

David Talbot has been a Patrick commissioner since 2008. He came to live in the island in 1975 to become company secretary for Waltons Television and in 1975 became the first managing director of Waltons Finance. He started his own accountancy practice in 1999 which he subsequently sold in 2008 to concentrate on his Connect2 charity.


Onchan - three seats


Zac Hall. Standing as a Liberal Vannin candidate. A qualified airline pilot and is currently working as senior first officer with Eastern Airways.

Peter Karran, initially MHK for Middle but following boundary changes has been an Onchan MHK for over two decades. He formed the Liberal Vannin Party 2006.

June Kelly, is chairman of Onchan Commissioners. Began work as a nursery assistant before a career in nursing.
David Quirk. His political career began in 1986 when he was elected to Onchan Commissioners. He was elected as MHK for Onchan in 2006.

Brian Stowell was chairman of Onchan Commissioners until May this year.

Adrian Earnshaw, Home Affairs Ministe,r has represented the district since 2001. His entry to politics was via Onchan Commissioners in 1996. He was elected to the House of Keys a year later.


Peel  - one seat


Tim Crookall, elected to Peel in the 2006 general election. Currently chairman of the Isle of Man Water and Sewerage Authority. Has also been on many standing and select committees of Tynwald and the House of Keys.

Rodger Gimbert is a  Peel commissioner. Stood for the Peel seat in the last general election  when he losing out to Tim Crookall. Currently chairman of the town’s Chamber of Commerce.
 
Ray Harmer is a Peel commissioner, serving as chairman from May 2010 to 2011.

Leslie Hanson has lived and worked in Peel for 30 years and owns a dental practice in the area. Served as a member of the committee of Eary Cushlin outdoor education centre.

Arran Kaighin is a local businessman is the fifth general election candidate standing for Peel.

 

Ramsey - two seats


Allan Bell is the longest serving minister in the current cabinet. MHK for Ramsey since 1984 and was Treasury Minister for nine years until his current role as Minister for Economic Development following last year’s government restructuring.

Anne Craine, is the current Treasury Minister and has been MHK for Ramsey since 2003. Mrs Craine is daughter of former Tynwald president Sir Charles Kerruish.

Leonard Singer represented the town as MHK from 1995 to 2003 and was an MLC from 2003 to 2006. He is currently a member of Ramsey Town Commissioners.

John McDonough is a civil servant who has lived in Ramsey since moving to the island 32 years ago. The 44-year-old is married with a six-year-old son.

Linda Bowers-Kasch standing as a Liberal Vannin Party candidate is a member of the Isle of Man Employment Tribunal Panel and Institute of Directors.

Lawrie Hooper is an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, the sixth candidate to declare for Ramsey.


Rushen  - three seats


Phil Gawne. MHK for Rushen since 2003. Minister for Agriculture for five years and is currently Minister for Infrastructure.

Quintin Gill, elected to Rushen in 2001 and has been political member for various government departments and is currently chairman of the Manx Electricity Authority. He is deputy Speaker of the House of Keys.

Dr John Orme. Former member of the House of Keys from 1985 to 1991, during which time he promoted the IRIS sewage and drainage project. Since 1995 he has been a barrister, prosecuting for the Crown and defending in criminal courts.

Laurence Skelly, Lives in Rushen, runs wholesale business Manx Inspirations with his wife Jackie and is a partner in event management company Destination Isle of Man.

Juan Watterson is the youngest MHK in the current parliament. Elected to Rushen in the 2006 general election. Member for Economic Development , he chaired the select committee that investigated the collapse of the Kaupthing Singer and Friedlander bank

David Jones is an engineer from Lonan standing as a Liberal Vannin candidate.
