Driving ban for man who knocked cyclist off bike

A Ballasalla man who knocked a cyclist off their bike following a "momentary lapse of concentration" has been disqualified from driving.

43-year-old Craig Astley was sentenced at Douglas Courthouse yesterday after pleading guilty to driving without due care and attention.

He hit the female cyclist at around 7.30am on April 8th as he was travelling to work along Cooil Road in Braddan.

The joiner and garage door fitter was turning left into the Business Park when his van struck the woman - she suffered minor injuries.

Sentencing him Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said "there are lots of cyclists on the Isle of Man so everyone must take care - you didn't take care in this case".

She fined him £600 and awarded six penalty points - under the totting up provision, due to previous convictions, this resulted in a six month disqualification from driving.

Astley was also ordered to pay costs of £50.
