Don't try and stockpile medicines, pharmacies urge

Island pharmacies are urging people to not try and stockpile medicines during the latest lockdown.

The Isle of Man Pharmacy Contractors Association says the supply chain of medicines is currently stable, and says whilst outlets are still operating an 'open door' policy, measures have been put in place to protect both customers and staff.

The organisation adds demand for prescriptions and over-the-counter medicines, other health-related products, advice and reassurance has increased 'dramatically' in the past few weeks.

Spokesperson for the IOM Pharmacy Contractors Association, Ian Hemensley, says: "Community pharmacy teams are an important part of the NHS team and like all NHS workers we are under huge pressure at the moment.

"We are asking people to take some simple steps to help protect our pharmacy teams so that we can continue to carry out their critical roles and ensure that everyone continues to be able to obtain the medicines, help and support they need, when they need it.

"Pharmacies will remain open wherever possible, but you may see some are having to reduce their opening hours, or close over lunchtime. This is due to a reduced number of available staff and also to ensure that pharmacy teams have time to carry out core tasks such as preparing medicines for regular vulnerable patients and Care Homes and ensure other vital services can continue to be provided as safely as possible."

Among the advice being given to residents is not entering pharmacies if you're showing Covid-19 symptoms, don't visit unless it's essential, wear face coverings and observe social distancing in stores and be patient and respectful towards staff.

Meanwhile, Mr Hemensley also confirmed St Johns Ambulance have offered again to deliver medication to anyone who's shielding or isolating.

However, he says this is a voluntary service and should only be used by those who have no-one who could collect medication on their behalf.
