'Myriad of mechanisms' could protect digital voting system.

A cyber security expert insists the industry is aware of the threats attackers pose to electronic voting systems.

Amendments to election law have been promised in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

It follows problems some residents faced when casting their ballots to choose new local authority boards in July due to coronavirus restrictions.

There have been calls to introduce a digital system for future elections to improve accessibility and efficiency.

However, critics claim such a move would be fraught with technical issues as well as becoming the target of hackers.

There are currently no plans to move to an electronic voting system.

Andy Cuff from Computer Network Defence (CND) said a number of mechanisms are available to ensure the process could be secure.
