Department of Health studying breast screening report

Women on the Isle of Man are being urged to continue attending breast screening appointments despite “over diagnosis” statistics published this week.

An independent report, which was commissioned by the UK Department of Health and Cancer Research, shows that breast screening does extend lives, but at a cost.

Figures show that while screening prevents around 1,300 breast cancer deaths a year it can lead to around 4,000 women having treatment for a condition that would never have become fatal.

Director of Public Health Dr Kishore says the Department of Health will study the report carefully:
