The Customs and Excise division of the Treasury has now formally taken responsibility for Passports, Immigration and Nationality services.
The move means the division has been renamed Customs and Immigration, and is designed to improve efficiency and effectiveness through shared resources and personnel.
It also comes as both teams undertake a number of similar jobs, so merging them will increase flexibility, resilience and effectiveness.
Cabinet Office Minister Kate Lord-Brennan says these changes will help to improve national security and address strategic risk.
