Commission hits back at critical report

The Communications Commission has issued a statement in response to a highly critical report in to the Island’s telecommunications competition laws and regulations.

Leading law firm Watson, Farley and Williams ranked the Isle of Man 36th out of 37 countries for having the most ineffective system of telecoms competition laws.

This was at the request of Cable and Wireless, which operates as a provider in all of these jurisdictions.

In response, the Commission said it was disappointed that the company had ‘chosen to launch a public offensive’ which damage the ‘international reputation’ of the Island.

The CC also accused Cable and Wireless of ‘campaigning on behalf of particular interests’ via an off-Island law firm.

The current telecommunications market is currently is currently partway through a period of public consultation, which is due to finish on April 5.

The Commission claims that part of this is to put in place a ‘comprehensive system of economic regulation’.
