Ban for drink driver who learnt lesson 'the hard way'

A drink driver from Andreas has been banned from the road for two years after police were tipped off by a member of the public.

24-year-old Craig Robert Wyers, of Ballasteen Road, was almost double the legal limit when he was stopped by officers in the early hours of February 19th.

A witness had called them to say they'd seen Wyers get into his Range Rover in the car park at the Palace Hotel and Casino in Douglas and knew he'd been drinking.

At Douglas Courthouse yesterday Wyers admitted drink driving - the court heard police had seen him driving in the car park before stopping and reversing into a parking space.

The prosecutor told the court officers suspected he was about to drive away but had stopped when he saw the marked van turn up.

When officers spoke to him his eyes were glazed, he smelt of intoxicants and he was unsteady on his feet - he was arrested and taken to Police Headquarters.

Addressing the court his advocate described it as a "foolish error" that could cost Wyers his employment adding it was "a matter of huge regret".

Sentencing Wyers, who had no previous convictions, Magistrates told him it was a "lapse of judgement" that would have "far reaching consequences".

They fined him £1,200 and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £200 adding "you've learnt a lesson the hard way".
