Ban for drink driver caught on wrong side of road

A drink driver who was caught driving on the wrong side of the road has been banned from driving for three years.

30-year-old Anee Du Toit was arrested by police on the New Castletown Road in Douglas in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers spotted her Honda CRV 'swerving' across the road as she travelled towards them - they had to pull over so she didn't hit their vehicle.

At Douglas Courthouse yesterday the Ballasalla woman pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

Police who stopped Du Toit at 1.40am described her as smelling of intoxicants and slurring her words; she failed a roadside breath test and was taken to Police Headquarters.

Whilst there further readings showed she was more than twice the legal drink drive limit.

During her court appearance Du Toit's advocate described her actions as a "one off, out of character, error of judgement".

He told the court she'd made a "very foolish decision whilst in drink" to drive to her parents' home in Ballasalla to tend to their dog whilst they were away.

Sentencing Du Toit, who has no previous convictions, Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said it was a "relatively high reading" and she was lucky officers had stopped her when they had.

She fined her £1,000 and ordered her to pay £125 in costs - Du Toit was also banned from driving until she's undertaken an extended driving test and rehabilitation course.

Passing sentence Mrs Hughes said it never ceased to amaze her that professional people took the decision to drink drive adding "you took that decision and you have to pay for that".
