A&E recommendation for NSC flume injury

A trip down a flume resulted in a trip to A&E for one Island resident.

New details have been released regarding injuries sustained by those using the flumes at the NSC in Douglas.

An FOI request revealed 11 people using them sustained injuries - 5 on the flume itself and 6 replating to slip, trip of falls on the staircase/platform.

Figures published by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture state 11 people required first aid on the site at the NSC.

When asked how many required hospital treatment - the department said
although no ambulances were called, recommendation was given to one person to go to A&E.

The 5 Injuries relating to the flume happened between 10 - 20 December 2021 and tther 6 between 10 Dec 2021 - 5 Jan 2022.

The flumes - which had been shut for more than three years for a multi-million pound revamp re-opened at the end of November last year.

However, by January 1 this year - one had closed.

Government said the closure followed concerns just before Christmas that 'the swimmer's exit from the flume wasn't always as smooth as it should be.'

A subsequent statement said the 'exact cause of the problem was yet to be established', but the observations of staff and users’ experience on the flume have been sent to the contractor that installed the facility.
