Presidents Cup: Brandel Chamblee declares USA’s Sunday singles performance best in team history — including Ryder Cup

Former PGA Tour player and golf analyst Brandel Chamblee has declared Team USA’s 17-13 comeback victory over the International team their “greatest-ever Sunday singles performance”, including those in the Ryder Cup.

Team USA trailed by three points heading into the Sunday singles at Medinah, leaving them needing eight points from the final 12 matches to avoid a first Presidents Cup defeat since 1998. They responded in spectacular fashion.

Cameron Young, Justin Thomas and Scottie Scheffler delivered early points for Team USA, before victories for Chris Gotterup, Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa and Jackson Koivun - with Xander Schauffele already guaranteed at least a half against Ryan Fox - ended the Internationals' hopes of victory.

Jacob Bridgeman then secured the crucial point to guarantee Team USA would lift the trophy once again. He rallied from one down with three holes to play to defeat Min Woo Lee on the final hole, completing the biggest final-day comeback in Presidents Cup history and sparking wild celebrations.

"The US team nailed it," Chamblee told the Golf Channel.

"What we saw today was historic - this is the greatest ever Sunday single performance, not just by a President's Cup team, but by a US Ryder Cup team.

"You go all the way back to 1979 in the Ryder Cup, the U.S. team had never won more than eight and a half points. You go all the way back to the beginnings in 1994 of the Presidents Cup, the US team had never won more than eight points.

"What happened today was what was predicted to happen all week long, given the disparity between the world rank of the international team and the US team."

Chamblee also suggested that the US team, who suffered defeat on home soil at the 2025 Ryder Cup, were motivated by a desire to prove their doubters wrong as they looked to avoid a second successive team-event defeat.

"But when you look at the final result, nine and a half to two and a half, and again, go back to 2025, the final day of the Ryder Cup - look at what happened today.

"In the final day of the singles at the Ryder Cup in 2025, Europe only won one match. Today, the Internationals only won two matches. So you're talking about 24 matches.

"It feels like to me that the US team is chagrined a little bit at some of the criticism coming their way, perhaps from the Ryder Cup lack of success.

"But in the individual performances, in the Sunday singles, what they did last time they were out at the Ryder Cup was historic."

Snedeker: Team USA will be a problem at Ryder Cup

Victorious Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker believes the United States team "is going to be a problem" for Europe at next year's Ryder Cup.

The 45-year-old received some criticism for his captaincy as they were staring at a first defeat on home soil after being dominated over the first three days at Medinah.

Snedeker believes that the eventual victory offers hope for the centenary edition of the Ryder Cup at Adare Manor in Ireland as they bid to win on foreign soil for the first time since 1993.

"It doesn't mean anything for me, it means more for USA golf," he said.

"I think we're all tired of this narrative that we don't care about each other, that we don't know how to play team golf. I think this proves it.

"You don't come back the way we did if these guys haven't all bought into each other. This team is going to be a problem in Ireland. It's going to be a problem."

The United States will be back in action next September when they take on Team Europe in the Ryder Cup, held at Adare Manor in Ireland from September 17-19. The next Presidents Cup will be held in 2028 at Kingston Heath Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia.
