Trader prosecuted for dodgy selling

The Office of Fair Trading has prosecuted a non-resident trader for breaching safety regulations.

62-year-old Neil John Young of Lancaster was sentenced to six weeks imprisonment suspended for two years for selling unsafe memory foam mattresses.

Mr Young had been advertising the heavily discounted goods through the newspaper classifieds.

After making an undercover purchase of one of the mattresses the OFT had it tested, revealing it to be a serious fire risk.

He was also sentenced to four weeks imprisonment also suspended for two years for trading without a non-resident traders licence.

Trading Standards Officer John Peet said if something seems too good to be true, it usually is.
