Suspended sentence for drink driver who's told there is 'light at the end of the tunnel'

23-year-old Jamie Griffin was sentenced at Douglas Courthouse yesterday after previously pleading guilty to driving with excess alcohol and having no licence or insurance. 

 

Police found him on the Peel to Ramsey Coast Road in the early hours of June 12th revving the engine of his father's car - he was rambling and incoherent.  

 

The court heard he was in a "maudlin state" due in part to injuries he sustained in a "horrific" accident on a fishing boat in 2013 which resulted in one of his arms being amputated. 

 

However his advocate said he'd had a "very major turnaround" having had positive news about future medical treatment and due to engagement with a local charity. 

 

Sentencing him Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes handed him a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, and placed him under a supervision order for the duration. 

 

He was also disqualified from driving for two years and ordered to pay costs however she commended him for moving forward saying "there is light for you at the end of the tunnel".
