Liverpool Trade Unionists Join Protests
Large-scale campaigns were held on the Island yesterday by Steam Packet workers desperate to safeguard their jobs and the future of the company they work for.
There were also demonstration across the pond in Liverpool were trade unionists descended on the Port of Liverpool building to show their support to the Steam Packet campaign.
There are fears the competition from the budget Mezeron Freight Shipping service will put such a strain on the Steam Packet’s finances that they will have to seriously review their whole operation, with a strong possibility of job cut backs.
It’s the desire of the on Island workers that the Government intervene immediately to ensure the future of the Steam Packet, which has nearly 200 years of history on the Isle of Man and employs over 300 workers.
Chief Minister Tony Brown has already stated that the Government had no plans to buy the Steam Packet.
