Police say just under half of the vehicles they've checked in the past fortnight have had some sort of problem.
Officers have stopped 190 vehicles at six checkpoints under Operation Uplift to look for defects, drink or drug drives, speeding and other offences.
They say 87 defect rectification notices have been issued for people to fix problems and avoid prosecution.
In total they handed out four fixed penalties and seized six vehicles, as well as making one arrest for drug driving and possessing drugs.
