The Island's ship registry has asked an international shipping body to reclassify ammonium nitrate fertilisers after an incident on a Manx-flagged vessel earlier this year.
The Cheshire's 23 crew had to be evacuated after its cargo started decomposing, issuing huge clouds of smoke - the ship was written off after suffering major damage.
Now, the Isle of Man Ship Registry has asked the International Maritime Organisation to change the cargo's classification from "non-hazardous" to "not otherwise classified".
It says the categorisation is misleading.
