Roofer given suspended sentence for cultivating cannabis

60-year-old Joseph Crook was sentenced at Douglas Courthouse earlier this week after previously pleading guilty to two charges of possessing and cultivating the drug. 

 

He was stopped by police dealing with a traffic jam on Victoria Road in Douglas on August 23rd when the officer saw him smoking the drug. 

 

A subsequent search of his vehicle found cannabis in a bag and a search of his home found he was cultivating four plants and 18 cuttings. 

 

Crook's advocate said he was a hardworking man who had lapsed back into taking cannabis as a result of medical issues but said he did accept growing it was wrong. 

 

Sentencing him Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said his actions were deliberate and pre-mediated and there was some sophistication in the set up. 

 

She suspended the three month sentence for two years and issued a supervision order for a year - he was also ordered to pay costs of £125.
