Rescuers relive dramatic yacht rescue

Trying to find a yacht which got into difficulties in the Irish Sea was like 'trying to find a needle in a haystack'.

That's according to the captain of the Ben-my-Chree who's relived a dramatic rescue effort which saw the ship assist three lifeboat crews and a helicopter.

The incident in July has been featured in the RNLI Magazine and is told by a number of people involved in the rescue.

The yacht had set out from Fleetwood on an overnight fishing trip but with conditions less than favourable the skipper, Alan Birkett, made the decision to turn around after 20 hours at sea.

However with his two companions rendered 'incapacitated' with seasickness their getaway soon turned into a rescue mission and a mayday call was made.

With no suitable GPS on-board, and their location unclear, the Ben-my-Chree was asked to keep lookout whilst on passage to Heysham.

Its crew detected the yacht, near to the start of the wind farm, and moved alongside it to provide shelter and security before lifeboats from Douglas, Ramsey and Barrow arrived.

Yacht skipper Alan described the actions of the rescuers as 'second to none' saying knowing that you can rely on the RNLI is 'absolutely fantastic'.

The RNLI says it demonstrates the importance of using specialist equipment for GPS whilst at sea and the need to carry a good VHF radio.
