Ramsey Commissioners to make 'small savings' from TT cancellation

The cancellation of next year’s TT will see Ramsey Commissioners make some ‘small savings'.

A decision was made this week to call off the 2021 event, sparking concerns over the financial implications.

It’s thought the racing fortnight is worth around £37million to the Manx economy.

Commissioners Chairman Andy Cowie says, whilst there will be an impact on retail in the town, the authority stands to be slightly better off.

"From the commissioners point of view, the impact probably won’t be as dramatic. We do spend a lot of money organising various events round the TT and clearly we won’t need to spend that money so there will be some small savings there.However, the impact on the town will be substantial", Mr Cowie said.

Events such as the Ramsey Sprint, which is hosted in the town during the two-week festival, will now no longer go ahead following the cancellation.

Mr Cowie insists plans are being worked on to ensure there is still a boost to traders in the town during that period.

He added: "We will be looking to arrange other events to try and bring people to the town in lieu of those visitors, so we’ve got some things we’re thinking about even at this early stage."

The 2021 Isle of Man TT was set to take place from 29 May - 11 June, however, the decision was made to cancel the racing due to problems caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
