Proposed changes to higher education funding announced

The Department of Education and Children is proposing a number of changes to how it funds students who go to university.

Under the proposals, which will go before Tynwald later this month, tuition fees will be capped at £9,000 a year for students embarking on a three year degree.

It means that students who choose to go to universities that charge more than this will be expected to meet the costs.

From September the department will also ask students taking degree courses longer than three years to contribute £5,000 a year for the subsequent years. This contribution will not be means tested.

Students who have already committed to higher charging universities or those who have already started postgraduate courses will not be affected by the changes.
