Prison inspection reveals major issues to be addressed

Illegal drugs and lack of a strategy to stop prisoners re-offending flagged up as main points of concern

An inspection team’s report findings has revealed that the Isle of Man Prison has a number of issues that need to be addressed.

The review was carried out by the HM Inspectorate of Prisons, whose teams visited Jurby in March.

The main issues outlined in the report were the lack of a strategy to stop prisoners re-offending, a limited range of purposeful activity for prisoners, problems with illegal drugs and an underdeveloped diversity provision.

The report has also identified issues around the no smoking stance, however the Prison has vowed to stick to their policy but this time with a renewed focus on robust enforcement and quit smoking support.

On the positives the inspection team commended the good standard of accommodation, a generally safe and respectful environment and a strong healthcare programme.
