A significant quantity of diesel and a vehicle battery was stolen from a secure yard in Balthane Industrial Estate on Wednesday of this week.
This theft left the owner of the premises hundreds of pounds out of pocket at a time of year when this type of crime happens all too often.
Police say the culprits must have smelt very strongly of diesel that night upon returning home.
They are also asking locals if they have been offered some red or white diesel at a cheaper price and remind people to secure domestic and commercial fuel tanks.
