The warning comes following an unknown trader offering home improvements by putting a leaflet through people's doors.
The OFT says although flyers can look professional if the person remains anonymous they may not be genuine.
The office give advice on how to avoid becoming a victim of the scams, warning not to employ those who call at homes without an appointment.
A leaflet with the information can be collected from the office in St Johns or from their website.
