The Office of Fair Trading have renewed their appeal to the Manx Public to be wary of opportunist telephone con-artists, following fresh cases of people being duped out of money by a long running scam.
As has been previously reported callers claiming to be engineers from ‘Microsoft’ or ‘Windows’ are asking for banking and credit card details in return for their assistance in dealing with a bogus computer virus.
Once in possession of the details they have been known to clear out the victims bank accounts.
In order to avoid becoming a victim to the criminals you’re advised to have all of your computer spy software well updated and urged to not give out too much personal information on things like blogs and social networking sites.
The general message is to hang up the phone if someone calls out of the blue saying there is something wrong with you’re computer.
