The Department of Education and Children says it doesn't know how many Manx graduates return to the Isle of Man after finishing their degrees.
A Freedom of Information request to the department asked how many students went to university at the government's expense between 2010 and 2012.
In its answer, the department revealed numbers had risen from 1,214 to 1,324 over three years.
But asked about how many had come back to the Isle of Man and found full-time work, officials said they don't track that information.
