Concerned about the relationship between DESC and the UK-based unions, a group of education professionals have formed their own education union.
The Education Union of Mann (also known as EdUMann) is open to anyone working in the industry under the Department of Education, Sport and Culture.
It's founding members already include teachers, support staff, headteachers, and members of the Education Improvement Service.
Founded on the belief the Isle of Man is unique and best served by those who understand the local context, the Education Union of Mann bills itself as 'by Manx educators, for Manx education'.
It's General Secretary, Jess Egelnick, says: "I am helping to build a union in which Manx-paid membership fees are used entirely for the benefit of Manx members and in which Manx members are able to influence and shape the path we follow.
"I'm looking forward to the Education Union of Mann growing and becoming a vital part of the machinery of the Manx education system."
Contact information and membership forms are available on the union’s website www.educationunion.im.
