New government Border Division established today

The government's launched a new Border Division, in the first step towards a dedicated Border Agency for the Island.

A total of £1.2 million has been allocated to establish the division, with 17 jobs to be created.

The move aims to tackle illegal immigration, labour exploitation and organised crime, following concerns about abuse of the Island's immigration system.

Government says the division will based within Treasury as an interim measure, before establishing the permanent agency  - though it's not yet known which department will be responsible for this.
