New charity info hub launched

A new online hub has been launched to help local charities register themselves and meet ongoing requirements.

The new page - at www.gov.im/charities - gives an overview of the steps Manx charities need to take on matters like registration, filing annual accounts and reports and the duties and responsibiltiies of trustees.

Members of the public can also look up details of local organisations via a link to a searchable index on the web page, and also included is a table of recent changes to the register of charities and a link to the register of charity mergers.

The Island's Attorney General, John Quinn QC, says: "There is an immense amount of charitable activity in the Island which is well supported by the Manx public. It is a mark of the caring, compassionate and generous community we are fortunate to live in.

"It is only right however, that their responsibilities are clearly set out, that charities account for what they do and can demonstrate that monies held on trust are used for the correct purposes."

A modern legal framework for the operation of Island charities, the Charities Registration and Regulation Act 2019 came into force in April this year, replacing legislation from 30 years ago.

A series of free seminars will be held this Wednesday (December 16) and on Tuesday, January 12, to give more information to those who may be affected by the change in legislation.
