New '20-minute-neighbourhood' could be coming to the Island

A new concept dubbed the '20-minute-neighbourhood' could be coming to the Island.

Made up of 133 homes, offices and retail units - the project - nicknamed 'Westmoreland Village' is planned near Westmoreland and Demesne Road in Douglas.

The Manx Development Corporation - the company behind the proposed plans - say the scheme is 'sustainable' and will provide a mixture of residential and affordable homes, public spaces and places to work.

The '20-minute neighbourhood' concept is based on the idea that residents' everyday needs can be met within a 10-minute return journey from home by walking, cycling or via local public transport.

MDC says this will encourage people to be more active, strengthen their mental and physical health, improve air quality and help local shops and businesses 'thrive'.

There are claims the idea of a ’20 minute neighbourhood’ - sometimes called by other names, such as ’15 minute cities’ – have been gaining momentum for several years.

They can be seen in the likes of Melbourne and Paris - and notably - interest in the idea has grown since COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns put a spotlight on the importance of the liveability of neighbourhoods, with people spending more time locally, working at home and if possible, cycling and walking.

Now, MDC wants to hear people's thoughts on implementing the Idea on Island and are inviting locals to 'drop-in sessions' at the Douglas Lawn Tennis Club on Kensington Road.

If you'd like to pop along and have your say or ask any questions, they're taking place on Friday, January 27 from 3.30 - 6.30pm and Saturday, January 28 from 11am - 3pm.
