Health and safety inspectors say the punishment handed down to the roofer who caused the Mount Murray fire will remind others of the importance of carrying out "suitable risk assessments".
That's the view of the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture which has welcomed the community service order given to 65-year-old Roy Cross last week.
The Roofcraft boss was ordered to carry out 240 hours of unpaid work after being convicted of three health and safety failings following the blaze in November 2013.
It started as Cross carried out work on the hotel roof - drying out flammable materials with a blowtorch; in court he was described as "uncooperative" and "obstructive" to the subsequent enquiry.
