MLC wants modernisation of rights for same sex parents

Same sex parents may soon have the equal rights of heterosexual parents should alterations to an existing act be granted approval.

It's currently at the consultation stage, with views sought on a raft of issues surrounding fertilisation, embryology, legal parentage and surrogacy legislation.

The Private Member's Bill will also aim to give greater clarity over the meaning of 'father', new meanings of marriage, civil partnership and extended provisions dealing with parental rights on the death of a partner. 

MLC Tanya August-Hanson is spearheading the changes, she said the act is in desperate need of modernisation:
