Minister apologises for unauthorised spending

The Island’s environment minister has apologised after spending more than £300,000 of taxpayers’ money without Tynwald approval.

Phil Gawne authorised his department to spend £328,000 on emergency repair work to the cliffs at Ballure near Ramsey in November.

He said the department had run out of time to go to Tynwald but that the works needed to take place as the Manx Electric Railway runs along the top of the cliff as well as electricity cables running underneath.
