Meeting Ends In Stalemate Says Nautilus Liason Officer
A spokesman for the Steam Packet workers who held a crisis summit with MHK’s and MLC’s earlier this week have said they are no closer to establishing what the future of the company will be.
The future of the 350 jobs and services provided by the Steam Packet have been thrown into doubt over the past month in light of the emergence of Mezeron’s new freight service taking a lot of the companies custom.
Aswell as wanting reassurance about the future of their jobs and pensions they also wanted something done about the low rates of pay offered to workers on the rival freights, which they feel are massively undermining their own wages.
Nautilus Liaison Officer Chris Bowen said despite the politicians saying they did not want to see any job losses; they were not forthcoming about instigating a change to the way the rival workers are paid.
The Union spokesman also said that he feels the MHK’s saying that the problem lies with the Steam Packet’s debt is unfair as it’s a corporate concern, and something that the employees have no control over.
