MHK queries Tesco horse meat scare

An MHK wants to know what action the government will take following the recent Tesco horse meat scare.

Traces of horse DNA were found in some of the retailer’s beef products which were tested by Irish food inspectors.

Member for Middle Howard Quayle is raising the matter in the House of Keys today, when he will ask if the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture knew of the presence of the burgers, and other goods, in the local Tesco store.

He’s asking Minister Phil Gawne what will be done about the sale of incorrectly labeled products.

Mr Quayle also wants to know if imported meat products are subject to the same level of testing and scrutiny as locally produced meats are.

Following the scare Tesco has been branded hypocritical after removing Manx meat from its shelves because of auditing standards at the abattoir and physical defects with the building.
