A former minister who presented a motion to cut the Island’s emissions by 45 per cent by 2035 now says net zero is a “populist promotion of the day”.
Peel MHK Kate Lord-Brennan made the comments during today’s budget debate as she called for the net zero carbon initiative to be scrapped by government.
She said it was "dressed up as positive action and lecturing", and should be recognised as superfluous and abandoned.
In March 2022, when she presented the motion to Tynwald as Cabinet Office Minister, she said such large cut in emissions would pave the way to achieving net zero by 2050.
At the time, she said even if people thought we were too small to make a difference, there was an obvious economic argument to go green.
