Mechanical failure caused Manx2 crash

The right main landing gear which failed as the plane touched down

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has confirmed that it was mechanical failure which caused a Manx2 flight to crash land at Ronaldsway earlier this month.

The Jetstream 31 aircraft, which was being operated by Links Air, was attempting to land on March the 8th when it crashed just before 6pm.

According to the AAIB report the plane’s main landing gear failed just as it touched down, causing the plane to lean to the right and slide along the runway before coming to rest on the grass.

12 passengers and two crew, who had come from Leeds Bradford, escaped without injury.

The report says the mechanism to final failure is not yet fully understood but that it was initiated as a result of stress corrosion cracking in the top of the right main landing gear leg.

AAIB said that the amount of corrosion found in the crack suggests that it had been present in the last visual inspection of the equipment which had been carried out 11 days earlier.

Investigators have recommended that the European Aviation Safety Agency reviews the effectiveness of an airworthiness directive in indentifying cracks on landing gears fitted to this type of aircraft.
