Kayakers and Jet Skiiers Urged to Give the Sharks a Wide Berth
With the Summer well underway an appeal has gone out to anyone likely to be using the Manx waters for activities like Kayaking and Jet Skiing to stear well clear of Basking Sharks.
They have a reputation as being gentle giants but due to their size and strength there is still potential for causing yourself injury if you spook them.
Kayakers are asked to keep at least a 100 metre distance between themselves and the Sharks, with Jet Skiiers asked to remain 500 metres clear as their engines could be likely to disrupt or startle them.
Although by their nature they're totally harmless creatures, they have been known to breach out of the water, and with an average weight of between 8 and 9 tonnes they're not something you'd want to come into contact with.
