Manx public urged to back Cav for award

By around 10pm later we’ll know if Mark Cavendish has been crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

It would cap an unforgettable year for the Laxey man who won the World Road racing Championship and green jersey in the Tour de France in 2011.

The 26-year-old is also about to become a father for the first time with partner Peta Todd who is expected a baby girl early in the new year.

Bookmakers in the UK have Cavendish as clear favourite ahead of golf’s Open champion Darren Clarke and US Open winner Rory McIlroy.

Athletics star Mo Farah will also be in the mix as will yet another golfer, Luke Donald, who became the first player to top the money list in both Europe and the USA as well as being ranked world number one.

Should the Manxman win the accolade he would become only the fourth athlete born outside the UK to do so behind Ireland’s Barry McGuigan, Canada’s Greg Rusedski and Jamacian-born Linford Christie.

The Chief Minister has already sent out a call for the Manx public to back Cav in tonight's vote (see audio).

The other highlight will come when five-times Olympic gold medallist Steve Redgrave is presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The programme begins at 8pm on BBC One with details of how to vote given once it’s started.
