A man accused of strangling his girlfriend until she passed out has been bailed.
Nicholas John Trigg of Alder Road in Pulrose appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse.
He denies assault causing actual bodily harm on his partner at her home on Hillside Avenue in Douglas on February 27.
Prosecutor Barry Swain told the court a member of the public rang police after hearing an argument at the address in the early hours - when officers arrived they found the woman unconscious and she told them her boyfriend had strangled her during an argument.
During interview, Mr Trigg said she'd started the row and had attacked him before he restrained her in self-defence.
Magistrates said the allegation was so serious the case would have to be heard in the Court of General Gaol Delivery.
They bailed the 49 year old on condition he reports to police daily, doesn't enter Hillside Avenue or Hillside Terrace and doesn't approach witnesses.
He's next due to appear in court on May 5.
