Last ditch talks to resolve bus strike

Negotiations are ongoing today between the Union that represents Bus Vannin workers and the Department of Community, Culture and leisure

Negotiations are ongoing today between the Union that represents Bus Vannin workers and the Department of Community, Culture and Leisure.

Drivers who are members of Unite have planned a 48 hour walkout Tynwald Day (Tuesday) and Wednesday in a row over working conditions

The regional representative of Unite Steve Salter will be in last ditch talks with the Government this afternoon. He represents the drivers and hopes to find a resolution.

He says other parties don't appear to be willing to cooperate and was told by the Department; 'The drivers may as well just take a week of Industrial Action as that will solve a lot of financial problems, as they don't get paid while on strike.'

Mr Salter said one of the main issues upsetting the workers are changes to their sick pay. Some staff work up to 50 hours a month and that should be reflected in their sick pay. (audio above)

Hon David Cretney MHK, Minister for Community, Culture and Leisure, said: 'I hope agreement can be reached and the dispute resolved but we believe the Department has made a fair and reasonable offer to 'buy out' some historic terms and conditions.'
