Lack of interest in local authorities ‘a problem’ ahead of 2020 elections

Thursday, 12 December 2019 06:09

By Ewan Gawne - Local Democracy Reporter

The chairman of Braddan Commissioners says a review of election rules will only go so far in improving local democracy.

Andrew Jessopp says more must be done to generate public interest in the work of local authorities, and encourage candidates to come forward.

When ratepayers last went to the polls in 2016, just seven out of thirty local authority elections were contested (this includes wards in Douglas, Garff, Ramsey).

Coupled with low voter turnout in recent by-elections, the lack of public engagement in local government is an issue felt across the Island.

Mr Jessopp’s comments come whilst the government is undertaking a review of the rules and regulations which govern elections at both local and national level.
