The government's urging residents not to use rogue traders following recent reports of "cowboy builders".
A spokesman said cold calling is illegal on the Isle of Man- anyone touting for work should be reported to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) or the police.
He added: "This work is often achieved using poor quality materials and leads to sub-standard work, which is not guaranteed".
The OFT advises using an accredited trader, checking reviews and examples of previous work and not parting with larges amount of cash up front.
