Inflation rose by half a percent in January in comparison to the previous month.
According to the Consumer Prices Index the figure now stands at 2.6 per cent, up from 2.1 per cent.
Transport was the biggest contributor to the rise - and the cost of petrol and diesel has also risen.
However, the costs of coffee, cake and fruit have all decreased.
