Housing and Communities Board chair David Ashford MHK says he doesn't know how many people rent their homes from private landlords.
He faced a question for written answer from Onchan MHK Rob Callister about the number of private rental properties on the Island.
Mr Ashford said the government's data is limited and so he couldn't give figures for how many private landlords we have or how many properties they let out.
But he said 2021's census showed 13,795 people lived in 6,784 private rental homes.
