Hefty fines for fishermen

Fishermen are being warned not to fish out of hours or risk facing a heavy penalty.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture has spoken out after a skipper was caught doing just that.

Maryport fisherman George Southwell was fined £6,000 for catching scallops an hour after he should have packed his fishing gear away.

The strict limitations on the time that vessels can fish are in an effort to make the industry sustainable.
